Can’t Even Give Stuff Away!

What’s up with the giveaways, folks? I’ve got several contests going on right now and nobody is entering! It’s FREE STUFF!! And it’s GOOD STUFF!

Let me recap the current giveaways and maybe if they’re all in one place, you’ll be a little more inclined to enter.

What’s Your Most Embarrassing Moment?

What’s your most embarrassing moment involving the breast? It can be your breast or someone elses (be sure you ask permission before you tell their story).

I shared a story of my own–click here to read it. And then I asked Facebook fans to post their own stories. Two people posted, but nobody voted! I can’t pick a winner unless you vote! Here are the stories:

Story #1~Susan B.

One night, years ago, two girlfriends and myself went out for drinks at a bar/night club. My two gorgeous girlfriends ended up meeting two cute guys as they sat on stools at the bar. All of a sudden, one of my girlfriends jumped up, grabbed myself and other friend and said, “We have to go to the bathroom now!” When we got into the bathroom, she said, “Oh my gosh, I was sitting there talking to that guy and my “boob” fell on to the floor.” And he looked down where it landed and yelled, “What the heck is that?”

She then holds out her hand with her “chicken cutlet” style breast enhancer in it to show us. My other girlfriend turns to us and says, “We’re gonna have to get out of here because the guy I was talking to keeps running his hand through my hair and my extensions are gonna fall out at any moment, too!!!!”

Story #2~Life’s a Gift
My most embarrassing moment was a couple months after my oldest had been born. We were were stationed at Hickam AFB at the time & it was our first visit back to the beach. I squeezed into my old bikini and slipped a skimpy one piece cover-up over it. When we arrived at the beach, my friends invited me into the water to try my hand at boogie boarding…bad idea! A huge wave hit me and my bikini top popped open and I popped out! I was frantically trying to cover myself with my skimpy cover-up and looking towards my hubby for help…expecting him to come running with a towel…didn’t happen! He sat on the beach with our newborn just shaking his head! LOL! I am a very modest person & will remember that day forever!! :)

Since the only people who have voted for the stories are the authors and myself, I’m going to run this contest through Friday to give fans an opportunity to vote and to submit their own stories. The person who gets the most “Likes” wins a pink pashmina from RSH Catalog (compliments of Pennywise Panache).

Even if you don’t win the brooch, you’ve got $20 to spend on something at Rue La La’s great sales.

Here’s a sampling of today’s sales at Rue La La:

Yummie Tummie is a modern body contouring shaper. Your Yummie Tummie is meant to be seen while secretly slimming your mid-section and camouflaging visible lumps and bumps! Unlike most shapewear that compress your bust and roll up, the Yummie Tummies’ cotton bust and hip panels appear to the outsider as a normal tank top; meanwhile the secret midsection panel is smoothing and shaping your middle, eliminating approximately five pounds off your appearance.

Yummie Tummie is the first body shaper garment that is top oriented and designed to be worn each and every day as a foundation or layering piece. The effects of Yummie Tummie are dramatic for the wearer, both physically and mentally. Yummie Tummie will give you a boost of confidence! It is extra long in the body so it provides coverage as you bend and move. These shapers come in lots of styles and range in size from X-small to 3X. Prices range from $29 to $35.

Designing jewelry that is both fashionable and classic, Janice Giraldi blends modern flair and ancient drama into striking combinations of precious metals, gemstones and freshwater pearls. I love jewelry and it was hard for me to find a piece I didn’t like in this collection. The earrings pictured are $39 and the ring is only $49.

With their mod prints and clean silhouettes, it’s safe to assume that Julie Brown’s striking dresses will make quite the impact at your next big gathering. Their retro feel couldn’t be more authentic, as the label’s New York-based designer of the same name carefully sources vintage material, re-colors the geometric patterns, then casts them onto a series of delicate fabrics like charmeuse, chiffon, and silk jersey. The result is a series of frocks that conjure up the insouciant glamour of days gone by, when dressing for cocktails was a fabulous affair and jeans were a fabric reserved strictly for the boys. $65 to $79.

When Sherry Cassin designs, she designs from a place of experience. Two decades of experience as a luxury buyer turned out to be invaluable experience for founding Illusion by Sherry Cassin, the label she created to bring designer details and gorgeous shapes to easy, comfortable clothes. Going green—it’s not just for hippies. We all need to do our part to reduce our ecological footprints and be more environmentally friendly. We all say we want that until we have to comprise style to do it. That’s where SoCal’s Make Love Not Trash comes in. Their ethos is simple: lessen their environmental impact, donate to green causes, and make some great bags while they’re at it. They insist on sustainable materials, non-toxic inks, and donate to grassroots eco causes. But looking at their Safari collection, in tasteful, on-trend neutrals, from oversized draped hobo bags to take-anywhere cosmetic cases, your first thought isn’t “green.” It’s “chic.” Prices range from $19 to $89.

Out of pain often comes enlightenment. That was the case for David Eber of Samtosa Clothing. In 2003, Eber was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis—but at the same time, he channeled his pain to become fully committed to a yoga practice. The fruit of that commitment is Samtosa, Sanskrit for “contentment.” The label’s eco-friendly garb, made of 100% organic cotton and bamboo, is perfect for honing your vinyasa practice with stylish, easy-to-move in shapes and gorgeous, naturally-inspired colors. As if that wasn’t enough to make you content, it’s sold for a good cause, too: Samtosa also donates to the International Organization for Adolescents, a nonprofit that works to combat child exploitation, trafficking, and slavery worldwide. Prices range from $22 to $36.

Well, that’s the reaction Superdry clothes get every single time. The British brand mixes Japanese technicality with a rugged sense of Americana to create a collection of just-right basics you’ll want in constant rotation: tees, polo shirts, and a handful of button-downs, too. Buy multiples—come laundry day you’ll be thankful for the back-ups. Prices range from $15 to $38.

From Victorian necklaces to Edwardian bracelets, the one-of-a-kind heirloom jewelry designed by Elizabeth Sayles Brennan, under the aegis of her Los Angeles-based company Harlow, goes a long way toward proving that everything old is not just new again, but rather chic. Adorning the stars of such hit television shows as ‘Grey’s Anatomy’, ‘House M.D.’, ‘Private Practice’, ‘Monk’ and ‘Nip/Tuck’, her Harlow designs are also sold in such high-end retail stores as Barneys New York, Fred Segal Santa Monica, Roseark, Maxfield and Beckley in Los Angeles, A’Maree’s in Newport Beach, and Samantha Lee in San Francisco.

In early 2006, Elizabeth made the decision to trade working for “reworking” — transforming old precious metals into new designs that appealed to antique jewelry aficionados. Leveraging an innate eye for designing elaborate ornate jewelry into the launch of Harlow, her pieces took inspiration from her travels across Europe and South America where she discovered unique religious medals, century-old stones and other beautiful items.

Show Your Boobies!?!

As I was standing in front of my boss’s desk one day, waiting for him to complete his instructions for a project I was working on, I noticed he seemed a little distracted. He managed to finish giving directions as I picked up a stack of files from his desk.

As I double checked the files to make sure I had everything, I asked, “Anything else?”

He dropped his head a little and said, “Yes, Martha! Your blouse is unbuttoned!”

Of course, it was the button dead center of my chest, so he got a good look at some cleavage. Definitely not a totally innocent peek! I felt my face turn 50 shades of red as I thanked God for that stack of folders, clasped them over my chest, and got out of there as quickly as I could!

What Makes A House A Home?

The answer, of course, is a homeowner who adds his/her personal touches and knows how to decorate to reflect their personality. I love walking into someone’s home and seeing bits of pieces of them scattered about. It can be in a work of art, a piece of furniture or even the way they set a table.

Maybe some of today’s finds in the sample sales will strike your fancy and give you some ideas for making your home a reflection of you.

Okay, this is probably a bad item to start this post . . . But then again, it could be interesting if the homeowner is paying the mortgage payments with alimony and has a huge axe to grind with her ex.

These delightfully dark knife sets from Raffaele Iannello are so wacky that I had to share them with you. Use them to slice and dice your kitchen decor and instantly sharpen up dull conversations. Try a dash of humor on your counter top with a set of statement knives or serve up something spooky at your Halloween party with The Ex hors d’oeuvres tray. Pick up one today and add a little edge to your kitchen. $47.49 and up.

Add a little spice to your kitchen this season with chef-quality bakeware in crimson and classic nonstick. Spatula sets, roasting pans, and muffin tins will help you whip up the tastiest treats and mouth-watering feasts. Modern bakeware from Le Chef will give you restaurant-worthy results, whether you are preparing a gourmet party spread or whipping up fluffy muffins from a mix. Bon Appétit! $19.99 and up.

Looking to add some rich, rustic flavors to your cocktail party—or Sunday afternoon snack? Look to the Creminelli family—for 400 years, they’ve been curing meat in Italy’s Piedmont region, using only prime cuts from animals raised on small family farms. One bite of their wild-boar salami and you’ll taste what a difference a few centuries of artisanal practice makes. If you adore pepperoni, dig in to the sopressata, with its robust, garlicky taste, while mushroom connoisseurs will love the salami tartufo, which features all-natural pork speckled with delicate Black Summer truffles.

I’m fortunate to have adventurous foodies in my family! One of the staples in the stockings for the men in my family is gourmet jerky. It’s one of the things I always include in my son’s care packages (he’s in Afghanistan). But I ordered the set that contains Wild Boar salami, Piccante salami, and Casalingo salami. I thought this might be a nice change, and it’s fun to see them all experience new things! $24 for all three!

Warm colors, rich textures, and plenty of layering—these are the defining themes of not just your personal fall wardrobe, but also your table’s. Gilt has a selection to enhance anything from a small family dinner to a big party, from Beauville Designs, Anichini, Dransfield & Ross, and more. The art is in the mix: start with one of Beauville Designs’ luxurious tablecloths in a tonal floral print, and over that, set down placemats, like Kim Seybert’s round ones with intricate beading detail. Rethink the little details: instead of folding napkins, put them in Dransfield & Ross’s whimsical cracked-glass napkin rings. And why not stock up on enough serving pieces to take you well past fall. Prices start at $12.

Designed in Sweden, Sagaform’s kitchenware, tableware and serving pieces exemplify the streamlined looks and built-in practicality you’ve come to expect with Swedish design: A small bowl, for instance, made from ecologically-grown bamboo, comes with a notched spoon that attaches right to the bowl’s top edge. Sagaform also has no fear of color, with bright-hued splashes, both solid and patterned, adorning its dishes, glassware and more. I love this mini grill for only $18. It comes in a great carrying case that can also be used as a cooler! Pretty neat, huh?

The Magnolia Company’s wreaths are way more than a circular bunch of flowers: they’re art pieces in their own right. The “Chilies & Artichokes” wreath perfectly hits an autumnal chord, with spicy dried red chilies, green artichokes, pomegranates, lichen, and rust-colored grass. Or seize the spirit of the Thanksgiving season with a wreath accented with turkey and pheasant feathers. At the heart of each wreath are the exquisite dried magnolias that this company is named—and loved—for. Priced from $65 to $89, according to size, these are some of the most beautiful wreaths I’ve ever seen! You won’t find anything comparable for the price!

Kassatex has been importing plush cotton towels and fine bedding for over a decade from Turkey, “the cradle of civilization,” and Egypt, whose legendary cotton is greatly prized. The label’s Letto sheets are 300-thread count organic cotton, which makes for linens that are not only wonderfully soft, but also also less impact on the planet. Kassatex also offers the latest in eco-comfort: bedding in a bamboo/organic cotton blend, with a signature smoothness and gentle hand. (Both fibers are grown without pesticides). And, to give your bathroom décor an upgrade, Kassatex has a beautiful collection of accessories—from soap dishes and lotion dispensers to waste baskets and tissue holders—in a variety of looks that will bring a little something, something to an often-neglected room. So it’s easy to wrap your body, and wrap your life, in easy, comfortable style. Great buys on these towels–$38 for a six-piece set. Prices start at $8.

Accessories are the secret weapon of interior decorators—small bursts of color and pattern that can instantly transform a room without making any major changes. Bodrum Linens’ selection of pillows, tablecloths, and table runners offers a range of unique textures and palettes that will bring vibrancy to your dining table, sofa, armchair, even your bed. Collections include graphic, spirited Artemis (with its rich polka dot pattern); the branches, leaves, and blooms of Richmond; and Pompeii, with a mosaic-inspired floral motif. With these pieces on hand, your decor can always feel fresh and up to date. Prices start at $24.

Lenox is one of the world’s oldest and most respected names in fine tableware, gracing tables no less prestigious than The White House, where it has been the only American porcelain in continuous use for more than 80 years. Today, place settings in patterns such as Solitaire (classic cream-colored with a platinum border) and Federal (majestic black, white, and platinum) consistently rank among the most popular. The company also produces elegant crystal and giftware, including etched bar glasses and whimsical centerpieces. Even if you’re not up for re-election, you can feel like a head of state in your own home. Prices start at $13 for two of the highball glasses pictured to $79 for a full place setting of beautiful china!

Fun, handcrafted tableware. Bring whimsy to mealtime with festive hues that create a refreshing tonality. Serve with creativity with Rosanna! I love the Christmas “Walk In The Woods” pattern. Prices for this collection are just $19 (four mugs).

Snappy Tuna

BIA Cordon Bleu is a dinnerware collection with simple, organic shapes as the foundation. These stoneware pieces come in jet black with just a hint of white. I love the geometric look that this dinnerware creates! What a great tablescape these would make! Prices start at $3.71 for a salad plate. With the great prices on these pieces, a 5-piece place setting runs less than $25!

Breast Cancer Is No Laughing Matter!

With such sobering statistics, you realize that it’s not so far fetched that a person you know and love could be the person sitting across from her doctor, hearing the dreaded words, “You have breast cancer.”

It’s been said that laughter is the best medicine. And while breast cancer is no laughing matter, I just scoured YouTube looking for ways to make you laugh about a topic that garners much discussion–our breasts! I wound up looking to what I consider the greatest comedy team since Lucy and Ethel! The quadruplets of Southern humor from the female perspective! Have you guessed? Their names are Julia, Mary Jo, Charlene and Suzanne!

My favorite show of all time is Designing Women! I so wish the show was in re-runs so I could watch it over and over again. But thank goodness, some of the funnier moments are on YouTube and I’m able to share them with you.

Have you ever wondered why there’s so much fuss about a body part that was intended to nourish a baby? Why are men so enamored with the female breast? After all, it wasn’t meant for them to enjoy in the first place!

From the time those first buds crop up on our chests (and it was a long wait in my case), we spend a lot of time obsessing about our boobies. For that matter, so do the boys on the playground who eventually grow into men and STILL have a fixation on breasts when they’re old men! And we women, thinking that we might be more attractive to men because we have bigger hooters, obsess over them, too!

Men have scoped out a possible mate because of them (at first sight, of course), they look at pictures of them, they can’t wait to touch one. In fact, I think from the time a little boy reaches the age of 10 or so, it becomes his sole mission in life to touch a female breast! Their little brains just can’t seem to concentrate on much else for the next few years! Occasionally, we think we may have found a man who really doesn’t care all that much about our bodies, but typically, they care! It’s just the way they were made!

I spent some time this morning thinking about advice for breast cancer patients, and while I turned to experts, much of it is really common sense. You do the same things you should do every day to maintain a healthy lifestyle. . . So with the help of Designing Women, here are my tips for taking care of yourself:

1. Eat Right!

2. Exercise.

3. Be prepared for the fight of your life!

Too bad we can’t shoot breast cancer to eradicate it!

Another great comic–Bill Cosby–once said: “You can turn painful situations around through laughter. If you can find humor in anything, you can survive it.” So my last piece of advice is to laugh! There is humor in most anything if we look hard enough! And as Bill Cosby said, my hope for you is that those of you who are fighting the good fight will survive and thrive through lots of love and laughter!
